    May 6, 2014 - Blue-footed Booby (Sula nebouxii)

The Blue-footed Booby is found from the coast of southern California to the Galapagos Islands and Peru. They spend most of their lives at sea, coming ashore to nest and raise chicks. Females prefer males with brighter blue feet, as foot color is an indication of health. They are monogamous and lay two to three eggs four or five days apart, meaning that one chick is always bigger than the other. This chick pecks and sometimes kills its sibling, ejecting it from the nest. The second egg may be used as insurance, in case the first does not hatch, or there is an abundance of food, allowing both chicks to have enough to eat. These birds mostly eat fish, diving from heights up to 330 ft (100 m) and hitting the water at 60 mph (97 km/h).
